Random Gift Idea Generator

Random gift idea by recipient and budget.

Built and maintained by Paul Clark, Redmoon Software · Last checked

Blanking on what to get your kid's teacher? Draw from 108 gift ideas — 18 for each of six recipient types (coworker, kid, parent, partner, friend, teacher) — filtered by three budget tiers from under $20 to $50-plus. It works for secret santa draws, teacher-appreciation week, or last-minute birthdays, and the no-repeats option keeps serving fresh ideas until the filtered pool is used up.

Filter. Pick a recipient type and budget — or leave either on Any.

How it works

  1. Filter. Pick a recipient type and budget — or leave either on Any.
  2. Draw. Click "Get an idea" for a random gift idea.
  3. Repeat. Turn on no-repeats to avoid seeing the same idea twice in a row.
  4. Compare. Rerolled ideas stay in the history list so you can weigh several.

About the Random Gift Idea Generator

Two filters that narrow a large pool

The pool holds a bit over a hundred ideas, each tagged with a recipient — coworker, kid, parent, partner, friend or teacher — and a budget band of under twenty, twenty to fifty, or fifty and up. Setting either filter narrows the draw; leaving both blank draws from everything.

Combining a narrow recipient with a narrow budget can leave a small pool, so repeats arrive quickly at the tight end. That is a property of the filters rather than a fault, and it is worth loosening one of them if you are drawing repeatedly.

What "no repeats" covers

The No repeats this session option remembers what it has already shown you and draws only from the rest, resetting when the filtered pool is exhausted. It is per browser, so a couple shopping separately will not share a history.

Used with the filters, it is a way to see everything available for one recipient at one budget without drawing the same three ideas over and over — press it repeatedly and you will work through the whole set.

These are categories, not products

Every idea here is a type of gift rather than a specific item — no brands, no links, no prices beyond the band. That is deliberate: a generator that named products would be out of date within months and would be advertising rather than help.

The intended use is to escape the blank-mind state. You are not looking for the tool to choose the gift; you are looking for a category that reminds you of something specific about the person, at which point the tool has done its job and you take over. An idea that makes you think "not that, but something like it" is a successful draw.

Budget bands are in US dollars and are rough guidance rather than a promise about what anything costs where you live.

Frequently asked questions

How many ideas are there per recipient?

18 ideas each for coworkers, kids, parents, partners, friends, and teachers — 108 in total, split evenly across budgets with 36 ideas in each of the three tiers.

Which budget ranges can I filter by?

Under $20, $20–$50, and $50+. Each tier holds 36 ideas, so even the cheapest bracket gives you plenty of rerolls before anything repeats with no-repeats switched on.

Is this useful for secret santa at work?

Very — set the recipient to Coworker and the budget to your exchange's spending cap, then reroll until an idea fits the person you drew. History keeps earlier ideas visible for comparison.

Are these links to specific products?

No. Each result is a plain-text idea with its recipient and budget tags — a starting point you can shop for wherever you like, not an affiliate product list.

How is this different from the white elephant tool?

This tool suggests what to buy; the white elephant tool manages how the exchange is played — turn order and steal tracking. Use this one to shop beforehand and that one at the party.
