Random Spelling Word Generator

Random spelling words by grade level.

Built and maintained by Paul Clark, Redmoon Software · Last checked

Running a spelling bee or building a weekly quiz? This draws one word at a time from 171 words sorted into four grade bands — 50 for K-2, 41 for 3-5, and 40 each for 6-8 and 9-12 — and shows the letter count under every word. The export button downloads the full list for the selected band, so one click gives you a printable study sheet.

How it works

  1. Choose. Pick a grade band: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, or 9-12.
  2. Draw. Click "Get a word" for a random spelling word.
  3. Print. Use export to download the full word list for that grade band.
  4. Repeat. Turn on no-repeats to work through a band without duplicate words.

About the Random Spelling Word Generator

Four grade bands

Words are grouped into K–2, 3–5, 6–8 and 9–12 bands. The bands differ in more than length: the early bands are phonetically regular words a child can sound out, while the later ones are chosen for the patterns that actually trip people up — silent letters, doubled consonants, and the handful of words adults still get wrong.

Each band keeps its own no-repeat record, so a teacher covering two year groups can work through both without one interfering with the other.

Why no-repeat matters more here than elsewhere

A spelling list that keeps offering the same twenty words is not practice, it is memorisation of a sample. With No repeats on, the tool tracks what it has given you within a band and only resets once the band is exhausted — so a term of daily words genuinely covers the band rather than circling a subset.

That record is per browser and per band. A class using one machine builds up a real record across the term; a class where students draw on their own devices will not.

Using it as a test rather than a list

  • Draw the word, say it aloud, and have students write it — reading the word off the screen tests nothing.
  • Use the word in a sentence before students write it. Several English words are only spellable once you know which one you mean.
  • A word the whole class gets wrong is worth teaching rather than marking.
  • Only the last ten draws are stored, so record the ones that caused trouble somewhere else.

Frequently asked questions

How are words matched to grade levels?

Each band draws from its own hand-picked list roughly aligned with typical spelling curricula: 50 words for K-2, 41 for 3-5, and 40 each for 6-8 and 9-12.

Can I get the whole list instead of one word at a time?

Yes. The CSV export contains every word in the currently selected grade band, not just the word on screen, so a single download produces a complete printable study list.

If I switch grade bands, does no-repeats reset?

Each band keeps its own used-word memory, so working through 3-5 doesn't affect K-2. A band's memory clears automatically once you've drawn every word it contains.

Why is the letter count shown under each word?

It helps when you're calling words aloud in a bee — you can confirm at a glance that the speller has attempted every letter before you rule on the answer.

Can I use these words for hangman instead?

You could, but the hangman word generator on this site is built for that game: it keeps the word hidden behind a reveal button and adds category and difficulty filters.

  • Hosting hangman without anyone peeking at the word

Whoever draws the hangman word usually sees it on screen first, spoiling it for the group. Here's how a hidden-until-revealed word generator lets one host run the game off a shared screen without leaking the answer.

  • A spelling list that never repeats the same 20 words

Recycling the same spelling list gives an unfair edge to whoever studied it last time. Here's a routine — a timed daily warmup, a no-repeat weekly draw you can export and print, and matching grade band to real ability — that keeps spelling practice fresh all year.
